Obituary of Jay Douglas Weeks Sr.

Airline Captain Jay Douglas Weeks Sr. of Lebanon Township, New Jersey passed away Wednesday October 16, 2013. He was a husband of 55 years, father to 3, much loved uncle, grandfather and great-grandfather. Born in High Bridge, NJ to Marthalina & Charles Weeks, Jay attended grades 1-12 in High Bridge, and Upsala College in East Orange, NJ. He was a member of the High Bridge Reformed Church. As a young man, Jay volunteered for the Marines. He was proud to be "one of the few and the proud", his official service began in 1948, and after receiving his honorable discharge, he continued to serve his country until his last days. Jay Weeks loved to fly. He was trained to fly in the military service, and excelled in combat maneuverings and navigation skills, Aircraft Carrier landings and takeoffs. Jay flew F-86 fighter jets, then moved on to being a commander of multi-engine transports. As a civilian, Jay piloted for Capital Airlines, and then was a Captain for United Airlines until his retirement. A lifelong avid Sportsman and Outdoorsman, also a coordinator of several Sportsmen's Clubs in Hunterdon County, Jay was their legendary leader...their "B'Wana". Jay helped many young hunters learn safe hunting procedures. Jay owned 2 working farms, 110 acres in Lebanon Township NJ and 250 acres in Pennsylvania. He was often seen giving hayrides for township activities. Energetically and highly visibly active in local government, Jay started on the Lebanon Township Committee in 1982 through December, 2010. He served as Mayor in 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2003 and 2010. He was a leading voice in cost-effective government, and Jay fought hard to preserve the US Constitution and the rights of all Americans, especially the working man. While on the Committee he served as liaison to the Department of Public Works, Safety-Police, Fire & Rescue & Administration. He also served on Planning Board from 1985 until his retirement in 2010. Jay was an active member of RUPA (Retired United Pilots Association), the VFW (Veterans of Foriegn Wars), the American Legion, The Elks, The Moose Lodge and the Masonic Order. Jay Weeks leaves behind a large family: wife Matilda K (Jennings) Weeks, sons Jay Douglas (JD) Jr., Jeffrey David of Anchorage Alaska, and James Darrell of Kodiak, Alaska. Daughter-in-law Venetia Weeks, and "psuedo-adopted" sons and daughters including Slip Mahoney, Sharon Griffin, Jennifer Roalson, and Bernadette & Emmett Kresge are also among the bereaved. Grandchildren David Weeks of Lebanon Twp, Ryan Jack of Hellertown, Pa; Tyler Hoen, Jameson Weeks, Kaitlyn Weeks, Destiny Roalson, James Steven Weeks all of Kodiak, AK, and Adam Griffin of Texas. Jay was a proud great-grandfather to Stefania Rose and Gregory Jack also of Hellertown, PA. Nieces Kris Weeks-Oliveri of Maine, Diane Weeks Ranney of Massachusetts, and Ellen Weeks of Tennessee along with 6 great-nieces and nephews. Jay's celebration of life will include visitation on Tuesday October 22nd from 4-7pm at Martin's Funeral Home, 1761 Rt 31 in Clinton, NJ . Funeral Services will be at 10am on Wednesday October 23rd at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Clinton.
