I knew Gene for years, met him in Bonaire and my life has never been the same. I am in tears thinking I will never be able to hear his laugh. He was a sly person who helped me in so many pickles. My car, learning to drive it and always checking my oil..he always said Mobil oil is the best, and I still buy that brand because he said so. He helped me with construction, taught me diving, and I learned self confidence from him. What a loss, what a terrible loss...
I will miss him so much....

As scared as one might be hanging on your words about going into an environment we arent meant to breathe in. It is all I can do to thank Gene for opening up a new world to me. I am so thankful for the gift you gave me in diving. I will miss our long chats when I would visit the shop for my annual maintenance check. It was fun to talk about the topics of the day including goings on in local government. Gene will be missed by so many of us and I am thankful to have been part of the Whitehouse Aquatic Center family even if only for a short while.
My deepest sympathy to all Gene's Friends and Family.

The first time I met Gene was at his parent's home, picking up Bernadette for a date. I was quietly waiting for Bernadette in the kitchen with her dad, Frank, when "Hurricane Gene" blew through. Gene and Frank immediately got into a heated conversation on a topic, that I'm not even sure I caught. The two of them went from 0 to 60 in the blink of an eye. All in front of a stranger, me! Then as quickly as the storm arrived, it disappeared and with no ill effects from the malstrom I had just witnessed. It was confusing, to say the least.
I eventually came to understand that's how Gene, and his dad, Frank, communicated. Frequently at the top of their lungs, but, not with malice toward each other. I soon found out it was also how Gene tended to communicate with others, myself included. It was challenging, irritating, and often amusing. I think its the aspect of Gene (and his dad, Frank) that I'll miss the most.

There are very few people in this world that you would trust with your life, but Gene was definitely one of them. I became one of Gene's finished "products" in June 2003. I made my very first open water dive in Grace Bay, Provo with Gene and MJ. The site was rather barren as it was a shallow check-out dive for us newbies, but Gene found one lone flamingo tongue to show me. As if by his own special magic, he demonstrated that water movement would make the spots disappear. I'd say I was hooked on diving ever since...He was always willing and able to ride to the rescue too - once saving a birthday dive vacation for me when my regulator suddenly needed repair in Cayman Brac and Gene quickly faxed a schematic to the dive shop there so they could fix it. Gene is, and always will be with me when I dive, his careful lessons and methodical proper techniques keep me safe and able to experience and learn more with each dive. He opened up a world of beauty and adventure for me and whenever I see a flamingo tongue now, I'll think of Gene and hope he knows how much he added to my life. I can't thank him enough for being such a wonderful friend and teacher.

It’s quiet. I hear my breathing and the noise of bubbles of exhalation. I am focused; I am not thinking about yesterday or tomorrow. I am in the moment, in a world that few people get to experience. I am relaxed and beneath the sea.
The only thoughts that do creep into my head between seeing the reef and its critters is the voice of my instructor; my friend, Gene.
You’re telling me (sometimes screaming!) not to drag my instruments in the sand; to not swim with my arms, to stay streamlined and efficient, to make sure that I am properly weighted at the end of my dive, to check the direction and force of the current, to look for landmarks in the reef, to listen for the slapping of the boat to find your way home.
I have now dived all over the world and have seen many divers at this point. I am glad that I am Gene’s “finished product”. PADI, NAUI and SSI are just insurance companies and providers of learning materials. When you learned from Gene, you learned to dive “Gene’s” way. Gene had a passion for excellence in all that he did and for the reef.
Thank you for opening a new world to me. Thank you for being my teacher. And most importantly, thanks for being my friend. It just won’t be the same without you.
I will continue to listen for you. If I listen, I know you will always be there to bring me back to the boat.

Provo Turtle Divers posted a condolence
Wow - where to begin.... Gene O was a HUGE part of Turtle Divers - I don't know when he started coming here to dive with us, but it was a long time ago! I remember when I first met him 6 years ago - he came behind the counter like he owned the place! I couldn't believe the nerve of him! But his warm heart, generous personality and blunt humor won me over pretty quickly!
He fixed all our regulators and always brought us a new tool - told us how we were always using the wrong tool! He trained our staff how to fix and maintain our rental and personal equipment. When our staff members left, he trained the new ones! And brought us more new tools! No matter how well he trained everyone, no one could fix or repair our equipment like "Doctor ScubaPro Geno".
Thank you MJ for making Geno switch from the infamously, brightly colored speedos he so loved to wear! Our staff could barely look at him - funny how embarrassed they were but Geno was always quiet comfortable in his "banana hammock"! He even had the body to wear it well!
After the dive boat reached the dock, Geno would clean every single peice of his dive gear and lay it out in the sun. We had many people ask if we were having a yard sale! I think that Geno had the oldest and best maintained equipment of any of our divers! He also carried the best stocked repair kit - never hesitating to fix another customer or staff members BDC or regulator on the dive boat.
Geno's generosity was so high on the chart - I don't think that anyone else will ever come close. He will always have a place in our hearts and memories - he is one of the great ones that will always be a legend here at Provo Turtle Divers. RIP Geno and may you always find the rainbow bridge under water in our cool blue seas.

I love Gene. Always thinking of others! I saw him today and it was as if he was sleeping. He's gone to a new place and was doing the "night dive" that we all will take. He was just checking it out so that we all could make it to the other side. How typical! Yeah he yelled, yeah he was short with some, yeah he was opinionated, but he also was an excellent instructer and life is just another class for Geno. A class that we all are taking, but Gene is getting us ready for our own "night dive". He's preparing us for our advanced divers certification. Thanks Geno, I'll be there as soon as I'm ready to take the plunge.

We are most likey some of Gene's newest friends with our son, Sean, age 17, having just begun scuba lessons.
When we inquired about looking into scuba certification, it was Gene who opened up this new world to us...with all his enthusiasm and knowledge...always with a huge smile. He had only begun to share scuba stories with us during recent visits to the Whitehouse Aquatic Center; we hope to hear more of his stories through other divers who are his friends and an extended "family."

Most of my vivid memories of my Uncle Gene are from a time when Stosh towered over me. I remember the fun I had at his dive shop as a child playing with the wind up scuba diver in the water tank, staring at the eel he kept in his fish tank in the “dark corner” of the shop, and following Stosh everywhere- even if it was into the back room. I was always fascinated by the things I found in the shop and looked forward to the wonderful souvenirs he would bring me back from his dive trips. In the summer time I loved taking my mask and snorkel to go swimming in his pool. My Uncle and I shared the same love of the outdoors, the ocean, and animals. Unknowingly I had even ended up lifeguarding at the same pool where he had worked many years before. I will miss my Uncle Gene and only regret that although I had been thinking about it for the last few years, I never got around to calling him up and asking if he would certify me. It is an opportunity I am sad I lost, but I’m happy to know he is reunited with my grandparents, Uncle Frank and his beloved Stosh.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
I'm glad I was there for you, Dad...Now throw me a bone...Love Stosh.

It was remarked to me that my brother did not get to live a full life because he has died so young.
I thought about it and know that compared to the majority of people I know in this life, his drive, passion, and energy puts us all to shame.
He made the Energizer Bunny look like a slacker!
He packed a of of living, hard work, and recreation into his 56 years.
He is one of the lucky few to find passions in his life (diving) and (construction) and be able to persue them both as professions. He excelled in both.
He also loved to photograph the beauty he found in this world, especially at the bottom of the ocean.
If you find a personal way to honor his memory, please drop me an e-mail and let me know about it. OLEJKO@aol.com
