I work in Manhattan Detectives. The Chief's photo still hangs on the Wall. My father worked in the Bureau during his time. I was talking to my dad's friend who worked with your father/husband/grandfather during the investigation of the homicides of Detective Finnigan and Fallon in Brooklyn 1965. My Dinosuar friend said he was tremendous boss and one of the good guys on the job. May he Rest In Peace. The members of the Dinosaur Squad will remember him

Chris, My condolences to you and your family. It seems as if your dad lived quite a life. He must have been comfortable living in the County the last 15 years knowing that his very caring son was close by.He raised quite the gentleman. Did he teach you too shoot? If he did, he did that well too. Jeff Curzi

All of the young nieces and nephews of the extended Averill Clan loved going to Uncle Bill’s house. His home was great fun and was always stocked with an assortment of treats that made our young eyes twinkle and our spirits soar. We “kids” adored Uncle Bill because he genuinely loved children and he loved his extended family. He took interest in our lives, and in our most mundane daily pursuits. If there was a religious milestone, graduation, or athletic championship (meaning track & field- the only true sport) that involved a niece or nephew you could bet that Uncle Bill would be there to share it with you.
We thank Uncle Bill for all of the love and happiness he showered upon us, and the lifetime of cherished memories we all have:
 The special beach trips to Breezy Point
 The exciting excursions to Fire Island
 Cheering together at the Milrose Games & sharing a love of track & field
 The massive, frenetic, and loud Averill family gatherings where he took the time to talk with you and make sure you were having a good time
 And his signature move, of silently slipping a few bucks into the hand of each niece and nephew before they left.
For many years Uncle Bill was the true patriarch of the Averill Clan. Through his kind, generous, and gentle example he showed us what was important in life and what it meant to be a success. Although the Averill family has suffered a great loss, we consider ourselves lucky to have been blessed with his love and guidance for so long. Although Uncle Bill has passed on he is not gone, for there is no death for those who live in the hearts of those they leave behind. The spirit of William J. Averill, our beloved Uncle Bill, lives on in everyone he touched during his long life.
Thank you Uncle Bill, may you rest in peace in the arms of our Lord.
Your loving nephew,
Dennis

Bill Averill was one of the finest bosses I had the privilegeto work for. While I went on to be a Police Commisioner in two other departments, my friends and I often talked about Chief Averill up until I just heard about today's news. Your Dad was a true gentlement.

A fine Christian gentlemen who, with Captain Al Russo, supervised and lead in the NYPD with quiet competency. A well respected police commander and as I remember, a stand out track star at Manhattan. The Chief was my District Commander in 1969 in the 3rd Detective District. RIP.

I had many many NYPD 'bosses'
None even came close to Bill in terms of unpretentiousness,
moral and ethical probity, principled spiritual values, as well as other positive meaningful attributes and virtues that alone 'COUNT' in life's ultimate purpose. God
Speed his eternal spirit and
grant solace to his loved ones

Mr. Averill always had time to listen to active little Soren who had so much to say.
I think I remember him still shoveling snow off the driveway in '05 so Chris could go off to play basketball.
What a gracious man! He never minded that I read the headlines before I handed over the newspaper.
Goodbye, Bill. You have left us a beautiful legacy in your family; Chris and Mary, Kristen and Doug and Douglas, Megan and Ben, and Nancy and Ryan. Thanks.
Remembered so fondly.

Uncle Bill as we called him, was to me someone who I looked up to during the 40's and 50's and part of the 60's. I am truly sorry we lost contact
through the years. SORRY. I so happy he lived to 95. We lived so close his last years and yet so far.
(Ringwood NY). I think of his wife Aunt Claire and
Son Christopher and Bills brothers. It never to late to say good bye. 1/1/2016
