Obituary of Howard Byrnes
Howard L. Byrnes, 89 passed away May 18th 2015 in Flemington New Jersey. He was born in Tuckerton, NJ on October 15, 1925 and was the son of the late LeRoy and Alma Rosell Byrnes. He had received a football scholarship at the University of Georgia before enlisting as a second class radio communications operator in the US Navy on the USS Birgit from 1943 to 1946.
After the Navy, he graduated from the University of Miami with a B.S in Civil Engineering in 1950. He then attained a professional engineers license (PE) in 1977.
Howard is survived by his wife, Mary Ryle Byrnes, four children and seven grandchildren. The surviving children are Michael (Brenda), Scott (Denise), Gale , and Patrick (Heidi). He has a surviving sister, Doris Walther, who resides in NJ and many nieces and nephews. His grandchildren are Kelsey, Karla, Kevin, James, Sarah, Kyle, and Marybeth.
Howard's employment included Parsons, Brinckerhoff, Quad, and Douglas Engineering firm in New York City as an engineer in 1952. His major accomplishments included Tampa Bay Bridge, SunShine Skyway, Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, Orange NJ tunnel system, and New York Museum of Nature History.
Howard then retired from the New Jersey Turnpike Authority in 1992 after twenty years as a Professional Engineer.
Howard enjoyed building model airplanes, flying, gardening, photography, bird watching, fishing, furniture making, and most of all his family.
A gathering of friends and family will be held on Saturday May 23, 2015 from 10:00am until 12:00pm. A Funeral service will be held following the visiting, at 12:00pm at the Martin Funeral Home, 1761 Route 31, Clinton NJ 08809. Internment will follow the service at Evergreen Cemetery in Clinton.
