Obituary of Joan M. Monaco

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Joan Maria Monaco, cherished mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She peacefully passed away surrounded by her loving family on June 19, 2024, in Milford, NJ, at the age of 83.

Joan was born on October 3, 1940, and grew up in the Ironbound neighborhood of Newark, NJ. She later moved to Nutley, with her husband, where she raised her family before retiring in Hunterdon County. Known for her warmth, unwavering kindness, grace, and infectious smile, Joan was the epitome of selflessness, always prioritizing the needs of others.

Her life was a testament to love, kindness, and patience. With a PHD in Special Education, she touched many lives through her teaching and volunteer work. Joan was Director of the Special Olympics Program for years, contributing significantly to awareness and education for the special needs population of New Jersey. Her legacy of generosity and compassion will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Joan is survived by her five children and their spouses. Ernie (Marisa), Dr. Joan (Dennis), John (Noreen), Dr. Robert (Carolyn), and Karl (Tara), who brought her immense pride and joy.  World class wrestlers, healthcare providers and educators; raised with love, patience, and strong values.  Instilling in them the importance of family, compassion, education, and hard work, family was their greatest joy. Joan is predeceased by her beloved husband of 63 years Ernest Anthony Monaco and her parents John and Carmella(Molly) Napurano.

She was also a cherished grandmother to her 14 grandchildren: Ernie Jr, Chloe, Gianna, Tina Marie, Alanna, Kara, Johnny, Kelly, Jenna, Antonio, Angelina, Kristina, Jaclyn, and KJ, who will forever cherish the joy and wisdom she brought into their lives. Her home was always a welcoming gathering place filled with love, neighborhood kids, parents and athletes from the wrestling community, laughter, and the delicious aromas of her famous Italian homemade meals, lovingly prepared daily and for Sunday dinners, family gatherings, and holidays. She enjoyed swimming, spending time at the beach with family and friends, gardening and always offering a warm smile and a home cooked-Italian meal. 

A celebration of Joan's life will be held on Sunday June 30th, at the Martin Funeral Home, located at 1761 Route 31 Clinton, NJ, from 1pm until 3pm. Prayer service and words of remembrance will begin at 3pm in the funeral home.  

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the New Jersey Special Olympics in Joan's memory.

Joan Maria Monaco will be deeply missed, but her spirit will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her. May she rest in eternal peace.
