I met Candice only once, at an industry dinner with her husband Rob, and it was pivotal and memorable. I had been in business on my own only several months and needed support and approval to keep me going. Candice's warm acceptance and encouragement made deep impression on me. It is one of my fondest memeories of those difficult days almost ten years ago. I'm sure she has made a difference in many lives and will be remebered by many.

Beth Hunton posted a condolence
The first time I met Candace she warmly welcomed me into her home and I felt immediately at ease. I soon learned that we had a few things in common: chopping wood and Max and Cyrus. The second time I met her, she and Rob had invited Brian and I down for dinner. You see we had just moved in to the neighborhood. Well, one thing led to another and by the end of the night Candace and I were making snow angels on the side of the road. Mind you, Candace was “grown up” when I met her, she was not a 20 or even a 30ish girl. She loved to party, didn’t she? And the good times rolled on from there. Luaus, Mardi Gras parties, even a quiet dinner at home she made fun.
The last time I saw Candace, some 15 years later, she came strolling up into my garden with some freshly baked peach muffins.
They were delicious!
Picture a very moist perfect little muffin, not too big, with big chunks of fresh peaches (which she had somehow charmed away from a farmer at the farmer’s market for free-I don’t think he knew what hit him). The top of the muffin had this delicate perfectly browned crust with hints of sweetness. The topping was an addition, of course, it was Candacized!
Because she had style and creativity! She was always tweaking recipes and making them better.
She had a decorator’s eye too. While I was standing there eating this wonderful creation she looked at one of my dinner plate dahlias and said, “Oh that would make a perfect photo, the way it’s framed by the foliage of the plant. You should take a photo of that”. She helped me see the beauty of the dahlia which I hadn’t recognized even though I had been gardening for two hours.
She could buy “stuff”, often at Walmart, her self-confessed favorite store, and turn it into a Martha Stewart-like arrangement for her table top. She would paint it or put glitter on it to Candacize it. Her house and gardens were beautiful.
And what a dresser! Great colors, perfect turnout, wonderful jewels! She made her own jewelry, was a master gardener, great baker and decorator, costume designer, and more.
All these things about Candace I admired greatly. I could never duplicate, nor could she teach me her creativity or style. But the one thing I could and did learn from Candace was about friendship. I want to thank her for that. That’s the most delicious gift of all.
Thank you Candace

To Candy the love of my life. We had almost 30 years together and I think about those years instead of the future years we will not have.I find it hard to believe it was really that long. It seems like a flash when I look back. I read of the German weightlifter who won a gold medal but his wife of 2 years died in a car accident. That is tragic. We were so fortuate to have 30 and that will carry me through this. We met in October of 1978 and I fell in love with you, if not immediately, very soon after and have loved you ever since. Fortunately for me you loved me too and it kept us together though the ups and downs. My brother Mike is correct when he said "my success and happiness would not have been possible without your love and influence". You gave me the confidence to move forward in busines and life and sometimes make tough decisions. At the same time you also created a wonderful home with your love, boundless energy, decorating ideas, gardening and ever present thoughfulness. I hope you are in heaven driving them crazy trying to tell them what to do and they send you back. All my Love forever, Robbie

I assisted Candice with her Epimedium talk at Bucks Garden. I was so inspired by her talk I asked her to send me the poem, "Yellow Epimedium." I think now it is perhaps the essence of Candice, and a lovely memorial for her and all she created:
YELLOW EPIMEDIUM by Thomas Haynes Bayly (1797-1839)
When they return there will be mirth,
And music in the air,
And fairy wings upon the earth,
And mischief everywhere,
The maids, to keep the elves aloof,
Will bar the door in vain;
No key-hole will be fairy-proof,
When green leaves come again."

Candice taught me so much during our years together at Crayola. She taught me many business skills that I still use today, but it was the life lessons she taught by example that have really meant so much. The most important thing she taught me was to never take work too seriously (okay, she had to beat that lesson in to me, but I got it in the end!) She so often comes into my thoughts when things are getting out of control and I just have to say "Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!" and get a handle on what is really important in life. She will truly be missed!

Ode to Candy
To Candy,
We saw you at Christmas time and those too few and far between other occasions. Whenever we did see you it was always a pleasure. You and Rob always hosted wonderful get-togethers. Now very sadly the time has come for our last occasion with you as we bid you a final farewell. We want to thank you for the brightness you added to our lives.
We were sad for you when your Mom passed away. We did not know your father but can share your sadness. We were sad for you when your cats moved on although we never spoke of it. We would like to think you are all together happy in a better place now.
Thank you for being the great wife you were to brother Rob. We see Rob has success and happiness in his life that would not have been possible without your love and influence.
We cannot say what it is like to truly have a sister. However we hope she would have been like you. You always spoke your mind to say it like it is. You spoke up for what you believed in. You knew the right things to say. You made friends and family feel welcome and comfortable in a special way.
You were a terrific aunt. You always expressed a keen interest in all the children and with love. Especially when it came to doing things with the girls you were right in your own element like being a kid again.
We will all miss you very very much.

Candy was my sister-in-law and the most creative woman I knew. Coming into the family, it was a little intimidating as there was nothing she couldn't do. She was a goumet cook, a master gardener, she could sew, crochet, knit, did beautiful needlework and designed her own jewelry line. She knew exactly what she wanted and went after it. She and her brothers grew up in the small town of Brainards with little in the way of material wealth but all of them inherited this creativity in one form or another and went on to lead very successful lives. Her mother wanted to be sure the family stayed together after her passing and Candy assumed the role of matriarch and fulfilled this wish. Christmas won't be the same without you, Candy, and I'll always remember your child-like enjoyment of opening presents ("preso's" as you called them). The picture shown here is from a past Christmas and you can see she is thrilled with her Smith & Hawkins goose and gardening hoe. The world will be a little less bright without you in it Candy . . .
