Ed was my mentor and I felt privileged to be his student. He encouraged me to report and write to the best of my potential. I appreciate everything he represented and stood for in the newsroom. My sincerest condolences to you and your entire family.

Ed was a fine journalist and I respected him greatly. He gave me my start in the field at Forbes Newspapers and I will always remember him fondly. Our birthdays fell on the same day, and we always got our "Have some cake and ice cream" calls from Malcolm Forbes Jr. I also played a few practical jokes on Ed, and he never let me forget them. My condolences to the family. He was a terrific guy. Our loss is Heaven's gain.

I had the honor of working with Ed both at Forbes Newspapers and at the Daily Record. He hired me in 1989. It was my second career and I had no experience whatsover, but Ed and some others gave me a chance. Ed, in particular, showed great confidence in me and, supported by that confidence, I've gone on to a very rewarding career. What a treat it was when in 1999, we hooked up again at the DR. I never left the newsroom without stopping by his desk for "one joke for the road." I'll miss him terribly, but I'll remember him well, and will always owe him a great debt.

My heartfelt condolences go out to Rosemary and the entire Carroll family. Ed will be missed by many. There’s no way I could capture Ed in a few sentences, so I’ll just say this: A true news man, a truer friend.

I echo all of what my colleagues, past and present, said about Ed.
I, too, will miss his dry wit and humor. He could make me laugh even under the most depressing circumstances, be they the actual news or what's happening in the newsroom.
And I will miss having around a real newsman, someone absolutely dedicated to news and giving it to the people. He knew news and did his best to see that the DR continued to give people as much as he could during these difficult transitional times.
We shared a few breakfasts at Gronsky's discussing work projects and life. I learned a lot from Ed and will continue to do my best to keep the news coming.
To Ed's family, know that I and so many others share in your grief and will keep him and you in our prayers and remember Ed with love and laughter, as I'm sure he would have wanted.

Rosemary and family,
Ed hired me at Forbes when I was looking to get back into newspapers after spending a few years in publishing and being bored to tears in a 9-5 office.
From the minute I met Ed I knew I wanted to work for him and once I landed back in newspapers my whole life changed. I was home.
Years later when he joined us at The Daily Record, it was like no time had passed. Over the years Ed was a good friend, a great lover of words and an inspiration for how to do this job the right way. I will miss the extraordinary conversations about everything including poetry. He shared his son's poems with me a couple of years ago because he knew it was my passion too.
I will miss the literate e-mail jokes -- he never sent the mediocre ones everyone else sends -- no his were witty as he was and often literary. He was one of a kind and a kind man as well.
I will miss him very much.

Gontero Family posted a condolence
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that, the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
two roads diverged in a wood, and I --
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
Mi querida madre:
The first time I heard this poem of Robert Frost was from you in 1988. Knowing you, Ed, Eddy, Brian and Patrick was an extraordinary picture of love and understanding.
Rosemary, you lost the companion you had in many roads you took together. But many other roads are coming and you are not alone, we are here just by you.
Love,
Carlitos Gontero

Ed could always spark a smile, or outright laughter, with his stories and sound effects, his soundtrack to life. I'm honored to have worked for Ed, who will be fondly remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
