Obituary of Henrietta Siodlowski

Henrietta Fromholtz Siodlowski spent her life being in service to others. She was a caring wife, nurse, public health advocate, active volunteer, passionate Girl Scout, and friend. She passed away peacefully on September 23, 2021 at the age of 97.

Henrietta was born August 31, 1924 in Jersey City, New Jersey and she was raised in Hoboken. From an early age she knew she wanted to be a nurse. She graduated from A.J. Demarest High School in Hoboken in 1941 and entered a five-year program in health education and nursing with Jersey City Medical Center School of Nursing and New Jersey State Teachers College in Jersey City. She Graduated in 1946 with a B.S. in Health Education and Nursing and a New Jersey Teaching Certificate. She continued her education earning a Master’s degree in Administration of Public Health in 1957 from New York University.

She was studying nursing when Pearl Harbor was bombed on December 7, 1941. She and her fellow nursing students wanted to help. There was a shortage of nurses at that time, so Henrietta and her classmates signed up for the United States Cadet Nursing Corps where she served from 1943-1946. She spent time at Fort Dix and Walton General Hospital in Atlantic City. She then went on to roles of staff nurse, instructor, and supervisor at Public Health Nursing Service of Jersey City until 1950. From there she was a founder and Director of Public Health Nursing Service of Hoboken until 1959. When Hunterdon County opened a visiting nursing service, Henrietta was appointed Director. She served with the Family Nursing Service of Hunterdon County until 1979.

Henrietta married Adam Siodlowski on June 28, 1952 and they moved to Oldwick, New Jersey where they were active in their community, volunteer organizations and their church.

Her contributions and volunteer roles are too numerous to name, but she was particularly dedicated to the American Red Cross, Veteran’s Affairs New Jersey Health Care System in Lyons, New Jersey, and the Girl Scouts of America. Henrietta was a Red Cross Deputy Representative to Lyons Hospital. She and her husband Adam were responsible for the Red Cross Birthday Gift program, Sunday socials, and summer picnics. She was a Life Member of the Girl Scouts and served the Hoboken and Rolling Hills Girl Scout Councils. She was a counselor, nurse, board member, delegate and lifelong advocate.

Several organizations recognized Henrietta for her service. Notably, Adam and Henrietta were awarded the Distinguished Citizen Award in 1994 by the George Washington Council Boy Scouts of America and the Outstanding Service Award at Lyons Veterans Hospital by the American Red Cross in 1995. Henrietta was also recognized by the Department of Veterans Affairs in 1996 with a Certificate of Appreciation for Services and Contributions to Human Services Subcommittee.

A celebration of Henrietta’s life is planned for November 7, 2021 at 2:00PM at Zion Lutheran Church in Oldwick. A reception will follow at Zion’s Christian Education Building. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Zion Lutheran Church, PO Box 41, Oldwick, NJ or to a charity of your choice.
