Obituary of Katharine Ellen Martin

Katharine Ellen Martin (Kate) of Ridge, NY died Friday, December 11, 2020 peacefully at home after a long illness.

Born May 16, 1929 at Van Syckel’s Corner in Union Township, Hampton, NJ to Joseph Van Syckel Martin, Sr. and Ellen Stevenson Martin, Kate attended the one-room schoolhouse in Norton for elementary grades and graduated from Clinton High School in 1947.  Her first job upon graduation was in Clinton, NJ as a telephone operator.  

Kate worked in various positions at several Hunterdon County banks from the 1950s thru the 1970s, including Hunterdon County National Bank locations in Flemington, NJ and Spring Mills, NJ and the Town and Country Bank in Clinton, NJ as well as the Philkill-Schrimpe Insurance Agency, a family business. She also worked for the Town of Clinton in the late 1970s. 

In the early 1980s, Kate moved to Beach Haven on Long Beach Island, NJ.  She owned and managed her business, Just Love, a jewelry shop in Bay Village, Beach Haven for over 20 years.  She also worked in several casinos in Atlantic City, NJ.

Kate is survived by two children from her marriage to Edward H Schrimpe; Edward M Schrimpe (Patricia) of Phillipsburg, NJ and Cyrena Condemi (Gregory) of Ridge, NY.  Grandchildren include Jennifer Heenan (Michael), Melanie Schrimpe, Jeffrey Compton (Jillian), Brynn Stanchock (Jacob), step grandchildren Thomas (Jordan) Condemi, Corinne (Aaron) Maltezo, Lisa Condemi, and great-grandchildren, Madeline Heenan, Celia Heenan, Chase Compton, Aubrey Compton, Torren Stanchock, Anthony Maltezo, Allison Condemi and Amelia Condemi.  She is also survived by her brother, Douglas D. Martin, Van Syckel’s Corner, Hampton, NJ, step-sister Elizabeth Heft and step-brothers Richard and William Henderson.  She was pre-deceased by her brothers, Joseph V.S. Martin, Jr., John (Jack) Stevenson Martin, Thomas H. Martin, and son-in-law Jeffrey S. Compton.

A memorial service and final interment will be held at a future date under the direction of the Martin Funeral Home, Clinton, NJ.
