Obituary of Julia C. Waugh

Retired social worker with quiet dignity and warmth, loved helping others Julia C. Waugh of Franklin Township, NJ, died peacefully on Sept. 27, 2014, with her daughter by her side. She was 93 years old. Private arrangements were made, with a celebration of her life on Oct. 11, 2014. To send condolences, please visit www.martinfh.com. Born in Williamsport, PA, Julia grew up in Waverly, NY, daughter of Archibald Adelbert Cowles and Jeannette Marsh. A salutatorian at Waverly High School, and graduate of Cornell University (Class of 1943), Julia supported the war effort as an engineer for DuPont (Lowell, MA), manufacturing 50-caliber shells. She then worked for Schering Plough (Montclair, NJ) on a pioneering arthritis drug. While riding horseback through the Watchung Reservation, she met her future husband, John Dean Waugh; they raised three children in Westfield, NJ. Julia embarked on a decades-long career as a social worker for the State of New Jersey, with her last position as head program coordinator for Hunterdon Developmental Center, Clinton, NJ. In her retirement, Julia enjoyed spending time with family, and her volunteer work. As honorary member of the Clinton Women's Club, and past president, she helped many high school students as part of the scholarship committee, and was an active Book Club participant. Assisting with Hunterdon Art Museum and Quakertown Fire Company events, and acting as program chair for the Franklin Township Seniors group were also favorite pastimes. She also reveled in her work at the Hunterdon County Senior Center, where she was a computer instructor, helping students navigate the digital world. Her love of learning, quiet dignity, warmth, and genuine interest in others, inspired all those fortunate enough to have known her. Surviving are her loving sons, Gregory Waugh (and Julie), Stuart Waugh (and Janice), cherished daughter, Denine Phillips (and John), and much-loved grandchildren: Peter Waugh, Amy Phillips and Emily Waugh, and cousin, Elizabeth Atkinson (and Robert). In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory to the Clinton Women's Club, Scholarship Fund (702 Deerfield Lane, Asbury, NJ 08802, Attn: Carol Masek) would be greatly appreciated.
